FLAG CITY SLUGGERS 12 SOUTHERN OHIO COPPERHEADS 1 - FINAL/7 Innings
BOB WREN STADIUM - The Flag City Sluggers made its first trip to Athens a successful one with a 12-1 run-rule victory over the Southern Ohio Copperheads.
The Sluggers (9-9) are another team that got off to a tough start and has now figured things out. Flag City has gone 9-3 after getting off to an 0-6 start.
The Sluggers offense was powered by 14 hits but the pitching is what many people were talking about after this win.
Cameron Baker (Lincoln Trail), who has been a two-way player this summer, earned his first victory on the mound. Baker pitched three shutout innings giving up just three inning.
Jacob Brandon (Southwest Tennessee CC) was the first Flag City reliever coming out of the bullpen tossing two hitless innings. Talmadge Davis (Southwest Mississippi Junior College) pitched the final two innings giving the staff’s only run allowed in the sixth inning.
Flag City scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning putting the game in run-rule territory.
Matt Gardner (Little Rock) was one of the offensive heroes at the plate for the Sluggers. Gardner went 3-for-3 with three runs scored driving in two RBI’s and stealing a base.
Will Lafferty (Marshall University) also provided a three-hit performance. Lafferty added two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases to his ledger.
The Copperheads (8-11) scored it only run in the sixth inning thanks to Billy Adams (Tiffin University). Adams singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a wild pitch.
The series continues at Bob Wren Stadium with first pitch on Saturday night scheduled for 7:05pm.
