Sluggers Fall 9-8 in Nail-Biter Against Copperheads
ATHENS, OH — The Flag City Sluggers nearly pulled off a spectacular comeback on Wednesday night at Bob Wren Stadium, but their late-inning rally fell just short as they dropped a 9-8 heartbreaker to the Southern Ohio Copperheads.
Despite battling back from a multi-run deficit to plate three runs in the top of the ninth, the Sluggers couldn't overcome a prolific Southern Ohio offense that racked up 15 hits on the evening. Flag City now holds a 18-17 record on the season.
Southern Ohio established dominance early, pushing across four runs through the first three innings, bolstered by a solo home run from Brady Kaufman in the third. Flag City clawed back with a pair of runs in the fourth and a three-run fifth, keyed by a two-run triple from Trenten Smith, to narrow the gap.
The Copperheads responded with a pivotal three-run seventh inning to take a 9-5 lead, but the Sluggers refused to surrender. In the top of the ninth, Flag City mounted one final surge against reliever Jack Bracken. After loading the bases, a series of wild pitches and disciplined at-bats brought the Sluggers within a single run. However, the Southern Ohio defense held firm, and the potential tying run was left stranded as the Copperheads narrowly escaped with the victory.
Braylon Sheefel (0-1) took the tough-luck loss in relief, while Jack Leonard (1-2) earned the win for the Copperheads.
