Sluggers Outlast Mariners in Sudden Death After Extra-Inning Thriller
CELINA, OH — In an absolute marathon of a baseball game, the Flag City Sluggers survived an extra-inning roller coaster to defeat the Grand Lake Mariners in "Sudden Death" on Friday night at Montgomery Field.
The thrilling victory extends the Sluggers' win streak to three games and pushes their record to 8-5 on the summer.
For the first seven innings, the game was a classic pitcher's duel. Flag City starter Parker Faris was magnificent, scattering five hits and striking out five over five scoreless frames. The Sluggers held a slim 1-0 lead all the way until the top of the eighth, when their bats finally cracked the game open.
Aided by a pair of walks, an RBI single from Kaden Ford, and a run-scoring knock from Brett Reed, Flag City pushed four runs across to build what looked like a commanding 5-0 lead late.
But the Mariners (8-4) roared back. Grand Lake chipped away with three runs in the bottom of the eighth against the Flag City bullpen, then stunned the Sluggers in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Parker Vaughn delivered a clutch, two-run single off reliever Aidan Murphy to tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings.
Under league rules, after playing through the 10th inning still deadlocked, the game went to a "Sudden Death" 11th frame.
The high-stakes finale began with a crucial coin flip to determine who would take the field. The winner of the flip gets to choose whether to hit or defend. The rules are simple: the defensive team needs just three outs to win, while the offensive team wins if they score a single run.
The coin toss ultimately put the Mariners on offense with a runner automatically placed on first base, meaning Murphy and the Sluggers' defense had to put up a zero to take the game.
Murphy didn't blink under the pressure. He induced a couple of clutch groundouts and a flyout, stranding the base runners to secure the dramatic, winner-take-all defensive hold and give Flag City the hard-fought victory.
The Sluggers travel to Grand Lake on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35pm.
