Clippers Power Past Sluggers 10-4 Behind Early Offensive Surge
MUSKEGON, MI — A tough road trip up north got off to a rocky start for the Flag City Sluggers on Tuesday night, as an early offensive barrage from the Muskegon Clippers handed them a 10-4 loss at Marsh Field.
The defeat drops the Sluggers to 14-8 on the summer, while the Clippers pull even at 11-11.
The Clippers wasted absolutely no time getting to Sluggers starter Grady Mason (0-1). Muskegon erupted for four runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from Taylor Head. They added two more in the second frame to build a commanding 6-0 lead.
Flag City’s bats were kept quiet early on by Muskegon starter AJ Park (1-0), who scattered four hits over six shutout innings.
The Sluggers finally broke through in the top of the seventh. Gino Williams and Cameron Spezia singled to jumpstart the inning, setting up an RBI groundout from Miles Mitchell and a clutch run-scoring single from Trenten Smith to cut the deficit to 7-2.
Any hopes of a late-inning miracle were dashed in the bottom of the eighth when Muskegon’s Jonnie Gifford launched a three-run blast to extend the Clippers' lead to 10-2.
Flag City showed some fight in the ninth, drawing a pair of walks before Draden Wardrop and Miles Mitchell scored on a wild pitch and a Brandon North RBI single, but the hill was simply too steep to climb.
